Brewer Riverwalk Trail & Stabilization

The City of Brewer and MDOT embarked on a mile and a half long river bank stabilization program on the Penobscot River, to be followed by the installation of an 8’ wide multi-use trail.

The project engineers invited Gawron Turgeon Architects, P.C. to design a landscape to assist with both the bank stabilization and provide a park-like setting for the trail.

GTA chose natural granite block benches, fencing, lighting, and plantings. The plantings were a mixture of native shrubs to stabilize the upper riverbanks and define view sheds with an added benefit of providing wildlife habitat. A line of red maples along the trail connects the overlooks and resting spaces. Groves of hawthorns with masses of colorful perennials announce these spaces which are varied in size to provide both public and more intimate viewing areas.
